Enhanced Tracking Protection in Firefox and Definer

Firefox's Enhanced Tracking Protection helps protect your privacy by blocking third-party cookies. However, some of Definer's features may require these cookies to function properly. This article explains how to adjust Firefox settings to ensure Definer works optimally while maintaining your desired level of privacy protection.

Why This Matters for Definer

When using Definer's Custom Source feature, you may need to appear logged in on configured websites. Without the necessary cookies:

  • Some websites might block access completely
  • You could face frequent CAPTCHA challenges
  • Custom sources might not display personalized content
  • Your login status might not be recognized

Options for Managing Enhanced Tracking Protection

You have two main options to allow the cookies Definer needs:

Option 1: Add Specific Websites to Exceptions List

This approach maintains protection across most sites while allowing cookies only for specific websites you trust.

  1. Open the website where you want to use Definer
  2. Click on the shield icon in the address bar
  3. Toggle the switch to turn off protection for this site
  4. The shield will appear with a slash through it, indicating protection is disabled for this site

Option 2: Modify Global Privacy Settings

If you frequently use Definer with many different sites, you might prefer adjusting your global settings.

  1. Go to Firefox Settings > Privacy & Security > Enhanced Tracking Protection (or type about:preferences#privacy in your address bar)
  2. Select "Custom"
  3. Uncheck "Cookies (Third-party trackers)"

Finding the Right Balance

Remember that allowing third-party cookies represents a trade-off between functionality and privacy. Consider using the site-specific exception approach when possible, as it provides the best balance between Definer's functionality and your overall privacy.

If you later want to restore full protection for a site, simply click the shield icon again and toggle protection back on.
