OpenRouter

What is OpenRouter?

OpenRouter is a service that gives you access to models from different AI providers through a single, consistent API. Think of it as a universal translator that lets your Definer extension talk to many different AI services without you having to sign up for each one separately.

Why use OpenRouter?

  • Use one API key to try models from several providers.
  • Compare models without reconfiguring the AI Source for each provider.
  • Check usage and costs in one provider dashboard.

OpenRouter controls which models are available and what they cost. Some models may be available without paid usage at a particular time, but offerings and limits can change.

It may be a good fit when:

  • You want to try different AI models to see which works best for your needs
  • You'd prefer managing just one account instead of many
  • You want access to some models that might be hard to get directly

Get an OpenRouter API key

Tips

  • Compare Models: Different AI models have different strengths. Some are better at definitions, others at explanations or translations.
  • Check Your Usage: Open Router has a dashboard where you can monitor how much you're using and what it costs.
  • Start small: Test a model with a few representative lookups before using it as your default.
